Basic Language Arts 1 (7/8)
Instructor: Mrs. Hammel-Peterson   
Basic Language Arts 1 is an intervention-focused and small group instruction Language Arts class for 7th and 8th †grade students. This format allows for more individualized instruction and support for students at their skill level. The Language! reading and grammar program and its online program, Vocab Journey, will be used on a regular basis in the classroom. Writing will occur on a daily basis, and will include instruction from the Step Up To Writing and 6 Traits Writing program. Regular spelling tests will be taken from a researched-based spelling program called Spellography and content-area high frequency words. †Small group instruction will occur on a daily basis.†

Hello,
We are on the last week of middle school!!! This week we are going to the Environmental Learning Center and Watson Lake in Bellvue on Tuesday as an extension to reading The River and studying survival skills. We will finish our Exit Interview power point presentations during the rest of the week. On Friday, students will present their powerpoints to the class and family members between 10 and 11. Please come and see the great work your students have completed!!!

Hello,
This week we are doing MAPS testing for reading and math growth. Please have kids get some rest and eat well in the morning. We will also continue to work on The River by Gary Paulsen. Welcome to May!!!! We are starting Exit Interviews. Students will be writing about important people and events in their lives, and then create an powerpoint presentation on their writings. Hello,
This week we will continue to reading the book The River by Gary Paulsen. It is a survival story and we are doing a variety of activities with the novel. Students will be presenting a demonstration speech on a survival skill this week. They will share a document on the skill, so students should have a nice book of survival skills by the end of the week! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello,
We are actively reading our new novel, The River by Gary Paulsen. It is a follow up novel to Hatchet, a very popular novel read by many students. The theme is survival. We will be answering questions as we read the text out loud. Students will also research and present on a survival skill. Vocabulary quizes will be taken from the book and occur every week or two. One week left until Spring Break! This week we are finishing up on poetry. Students are writing many different types of poems, and we will be printing them for a small book. They are also learning about some of the more famous poets, and creating summaries about them for the book as well. We will have a spelling test on high frequency words on Thursday. Classroom Notes January 23-27
Hi,
After a challenging week last week, we are just going to "buckle down" and do some basics with grammar, parts of speech and systematic reading activities. Students will rotate in small groups so that everyone has a chance to learn and focus on the elements of language they are still struggling with in class. We will be reading about Antarctica, answering questions, and creating written work about what we have read. We may also do a little poetry as well! If you have any questions, please let me know.

We have been reading about artists over the last 2 weeks. We are creating powerpoint presentations on some of the main facts about each artist we have studied. These will also include a couple of the student's favorite pieces on each page. The studens seem to have enjoyed reading non fiction about some interesting people! Hello!
This week we are branching out into the world of art. We have read about Leonardo DaVinci and are discussing his inventions and paintings. Students will read about Van Gogh, Picasso, O'Keefe, Monet, and Michelangelo. They will be using the skills of finding the main ideas and most important points about these great artists. From there, we will create a power point on the artists and students will also do some sketching. Hopefully, they will enjoy the unit!

We have finished reading The Outsiders in class. Monday we will be having our final test on the novel. It was quite an emotional book. I hope the students reported that they enjoyed it. We will be starting to read some non fiction about Leonardo DiVinci starting on Tuesday and will be reading about art and inventions throughout the week. We will finally be finishing the novel, The Outsiders, this week. This has been a tough novel to read. There are issues related to social class, "gang-type" issues, and very difficult issues with death and loss. We will finish reading and take a final test on the book Thursday. We are almost done with the semester and have a lot to do before we are off. We will continue to read in our novels and create character sketches of each character in the novel. We will have a vocab test on Friday over words in the first 1/2 of the book. This will take the place of a spelling test for the week. We will also continue to work on Vocab Journey online.

I can't believe we are already done with one quarter, and it is the end of October! I hope you had a wonderful 3 day weekend. This week we will continue to work on our "Super Hero" stories. We will be creating the rising action of the story and the climax where a "big showdown" should occur. Hopefully the students will come up with some exciting ideas. We are already beginning 2nd quarter! It is hard to believe how quickly the year is progressing. This week we will start writing our own creative writing short stories. Students will develop a story, addressing characters, setting, and a plot. Students are writing about the past, present, and future developments of an invention of interest to them. Students are researching phones, video games, and automobiles. They will begin a new spelling unit, but the test will not be until next week. We will also be doing some review of verbs and how to choose the correct verb tense in their written work. They are researching about the history, present use, and future developments in these inventions. They will have a spelling/ vocab test over basic and common reading comprehension strategies on Friday. I hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
We have finished the "Coat of Arms" project, and the students did a very nice job reporting about themselves and creating a poster with the information. Please ask them to show you their work when the poster comes home! This week we will be finishing up Power Point presentations about parts of speech. They will include information on nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc... and will be presented on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on when everyone gets done. The quizes over the terms did not go well, so everyone will have the opportunity to retake them next week after we have reviewed the terms again. We will begin reading short passages about inventions and will be practicing the reading strategies of summarizing and making connections. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hello,
This week we took the MAPS reading assessments and completed our first AIMSWEB baseline assessments for the year. We also worked hard on our "Coat of Arms" writing projects. Students wrote about themselves, and we will finish up the writing next week. Each student will also be presenting their projects to the class. We are also creating power points on grammar and parts of speech. Our spelling/ grammar test will be on Friday on the terms we have covered. Please contact me with any questions you may have.
